The Socialist Party USA (NYC Local) stands in solidarity with the just struggle of Marichu Baoanan against the Baja family and the Labaire Travel Agency. It is painful to hear the stories of mental and physical abuse, over- work, and outright slavery that seem to multiple daily. It is an outrage that workers employed to care for such intimacies such as homes and families, are so frequently subjected to abuse. Even more frightening are the stories that make it into mainstream media, yet only manage to scratch the surface of the actual amount of daily abuse.
The rules of capitalist globalization lie at the heart of these abuses. Under the pressure of this system, workers are forced by economic circumstances to migrate to centers of financial capital with the hope of attaining better wages, labor protections and other social conditions. When they arrive, they soon discover that their legal status, languages of origin and desire for employment are used as weapons by their employers to reduce wages, or, as in the case of Marichu Baoanan, to met out abuse and impose conditions of slave-labor.
The Socialist Party USA believes that neither national borders nor diplomatic immunity eliminate our rights as human beings. We strive to create a democratic socialist world, an alternative globalization, where workers exercise democratic control over their workplaces and society to free themselves of abuse and exploitation. Such a world can only be created through the collaboration of progressive forces to challenge the existing injustices faced by working people. Such bonds of solidarity are meant to undercut the philosophy of isolation and competition which is so fundamental to capitalist society. The Socialist Party USA (NYC Local) pledges to stand in solidarity with Marichu Baoanan, DAMAYAN and the Domestic Workers United and looks to them for leadership in this important struggle. We have nothing to lose but our chains!
