Hey folks...

Hope you are well. So here we are again. We hope that the Socialist Party NY, SP NJ and the SP USA can sign on again this year, so that hopefully in '09 we can celebrate the one year anniversary of the closing of Guantanamo! I know we were in touch last year about events surrounding January 11th. I wanted to touch base to see if you would be interested in participating again this year. We are asking groups to:

-sign on as endorsers -mobilize people to come to dc and/or -organize local vigils / demonstrations / etc... -help get the word out!

This year in DC, on Friday, January 11th, we will be joining Amnesty International & the National Religious Campaign Against Torture on the National Mall for a demonstration, and then processing in orange jumpsuits to the Supreme Court. More details will be available soon.

Below is a brief overview of what happened last year. I hope we can work together again this year!

For those who sign on as endorsers, we are asking that you: 1. send an email announcement to your members / contacts in Dec and Jan 2. put a button on your website that will link to http://www.witnesstorture.org (you can download a button from http://www.witnesstorture.org/files/jan11_logo.pdf ) 3. do targeted outreach calls 4. put a notice in printed newsletters and/or put the Jan 11th flier in an upcoming mailing

INTERNATIONAL DAY TO SHUT DOWN GUANTANAMO 2007

Last year on Jan. 11th, over 100 cities held vigils and demonstrations, including London, England; Warsaw, Poland; Melbourne, Australia; Ithaca, NY, Phoenix, AZ; Creston, Iowa; Montclair, NJ; Budapest, Hungary; & Tel Aviv, Israel. In Washington DC, over 500 people gathered, 200 in orange jumpsuits and hoods. A procession went from Upper Senate Park to the Supreme Court and then to the Federal District Court, where 89 people, delivering Habeas Corpus Petitions and wearing orange Shut Down Guantanamo t-shirts, were arrested in the atrium of the Federal Court. Many of those arrested withheld their identification and took the names of men at Guantanamo.

Over 100 groups from around the country and around the world signed on to endorse the Campaign to Shut Down Guantanamo. January 11th 2008 will mark six years of indefinite detention for the prisoners at Guantanamo. This year, with the upcoming Supreme Court cases and the presidential election season, it is more important than ever that we keep the pressure on.
