"Facing Fascism: New Yorkers Remember the Spanish Civil War”

The Socialist Party USA (NYC local) invites you to a viewing and discussion of a recently produced documentary entitled “Facing Fascism: New Yorkers Remember the Spanish Civil War.”

“Facing Fascism” uses first-person interviews to document the stories of five New Yorkers who joined the international solidarity movement to defend the democratically elected leftwing government of Spain against a fascist rebellion in 1936. The five participants became members of a group of American leftists who called themselves the Abraham Lincoln Brigade.

These volunteers fought for the freedom of the Spanish people alongside international brigades from dozens of other nations. This movement emerged despite the fact that most national governments claimed neutrality. The SP-USA invites you to share in the examination of an international solidarity movement strong enough to allow New Yorkers to move beyond the politics of their own national elites and understand that the liberty of the Spanish people was directly linked to their own possibilities for emancipation.
