Yet again, the notion that poverty and squalor have some mysterious virtue in themselves, expressed in a modified form in eulogies of plain-living and high-thinking, etc, is still prevalent among many who might be supposed to know better. For Socialism, poverty and squalor are unmitigated evils, and a rationally conceived and directed luxury in material things for all alike, is its direct aim. This notion of asceticism, of the virtue of mortifying the flesh, of self-abnegation on the part of the individual, derived from Christian doctrine as interpreted by the Puritanism of the rising small middle-class of former days, is attributed to Socialism as a part of its ethics : is arbitrarily foisted, that is, on to a system of thought for which it has no meaning and in which it has no place. "Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Nuetral on a Moving Train"
In Howard Zinn: You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train, filmmakers Deb Ellis and Denis Mueller buck the current trend of showy documentaries, adopting instead a classic, unassuming style perfectly suited to their subject. Zinn may be one of the few famous Americans alive who's better known for his work than his face. Zinn, who bears a passing resemblance to Gregory Peck, appears unfazed by his increasing popularity. Matt Damon narrates, mostly excerpts from Zinn's autobiography, with which the film shares its title. In a depiction otherwise straightforward and plain, Damon adds a patina of glamour.

Join New Yorkers on Thursday June 19th for a day of
protest against health insurance profiteering. We
will speak-out against the proposed privatization of
GHI and HIP and claim Health Care as a basic human
right! We will mourn the countless victims of the
health insurance industry while marking Juneteenth – a
day commemorating the emancipation of slaves in North
America. The NYC action is one of 17 others nation-wide
in solidarity with activists in San Francisco, CA who
will be protesting the annual meeting of 38,000 health
insurance executives. On June 19th, join fellow New
Yorkers in declaring our emancipation from for-profit
healthcare and support for the single-payer national
health insurance bill H. R. 676.
