Brooklyn, NY - The New York City Local of the War Resisters League (WRL) will hold a funeral march on Monday, February 20, 2006, to protest the loss of life in the war being waged in Iraq. Gathering across from the corner of Remsen and Court Streets (in front of Brooklyn Borough Hall steps) at 11:30 am on Monday, participants will assemble coffins draped in black and in American flags, representing the Iraqi and Americans killed in the war.
- 1/25 SP Forum- After Katrina: Solidarity Not Charity, Reclaiming the Gulf.-

The Socialist Party National Office and the SP-NYC invite you to join us at a forum:
After Katrina: Solidarity Not Charity, Reclaiming the Gulf
Wednesday January 25, 2006
6:30 - 9 PM
A national dialogue on racism, poverty inequality and injustice began after Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. While FEMA and the Red Cross failed at providing immediate support for Gulf "refugees", community-led projects like the Common Ground Collective have continued the work of rebuilding the Gulf offering mutual aid and support from volunteer medical and health providers, aid workers, community organizers, legal representatives and people from all over with broad skills from all walks of life.
- January 26th: NYU Grad Student Picket.-

Join the striking Graduate Students at NYU for a rally and picket, Thursday, January 26th, 4pm, in front of Bobst Library.
Unionized teachers and teaching assistants are coming in from all over the country to support their fellow workers at NYU. Come out to show NYU that New York City is a union town, and that we won't tolerate their unilateral decision to ignore the GSOC, who just last year they'd signed a contract with. Now the administration is pulling funding for all striking workers, essentially firing AND expelling them.
Help us demand justice for the strikers! You could be next!
- Celebrate May Day 2006-
On May 1st walkouts at schools and workplaces across the US will take place in solidarity with immigrant com- munities under attack by Congressional legislation. These walkouts invoke the powerful tradition of May Day - the socialist celebration of international working class solidarity. Once again US immigrants are taking a leadership role in the struggle for social and economic justice, just as they did at the birth of May Day in Chicago a hundred and twenty years ago. The Socialist Party USA joins in the celebration of May Day and condemns the Democratic and Republican Parties for militarizing our borders and failing to protect the rights of all workers. Callous and ineffectual immigration policies are exacerbating racism in the US and creating an underclass of super-exploited workers, all in the service of corporate profits. The Socialist Party furthermore rejects assimilationist policies and attitudes which marginalize and criminalize the diverse heritages of immigrants and people of color.
Experience teaches us that only militant industry-wide labor action can challenge corporate power and win better wages, hours and working conditions. Nevertheless, the global inequalities that compel migrants to seek risky, back-breaking, low wage labor in the US cannot be resolved within the constraints of modern capitalism. In the tradition of May Day we call for the abolition of capitalist systems of ownership and trade, and the creation of a truly democratic society where production fulfills human need, not profit. In a world riddled with war and underdevelopment, we also add racism, militarism and imperialism to the list of global cancers which must be uprooted as prerequisites to peace and justice.
The Socialist Party encourages all members and affiliates to take part in the May Day call for “No Work, No School, No Buying, No Selling” and for members and affiliates to take part in local May Day actions.
A list of actions can be found on the Socialist Party USA website www.sp-usa.org and on http://www.nohr4437.org/.
- May Day & A29-
Two massive marches in NYC saw SP-USA contingents taking part. A combined NY/NJ group marched in the UFPJ anti-war march on April 29th, along with allies from a number of groups. We distributed stacks of The Socialist [read the PDF Here], and flyers about upcoming NYC SP events. On May 1st, SP Members took part in a march and Civil Disobedience action against US government torture in Guantanamo, while others marched with the immigrant rights rally to Union Square, the traditional May Day meeting place for more than a century. Photos will be up shortly.
- Alliance for Fair Food: Friday May 5th-
The SP locals in Northern NJ and NYC are joining with other groups and individuals to organize an area Alliance for Fair Food group. AFF started from the Immokalee Workers campaign against McDonalds, the same organization which organized (and won a contract) a boycott against Taco Bell. Committed to building links between farm workers, food-service workers, and consumers, AFF chapters around the nation have been fighting for better food, better work, and better wages.
Join us for a short film about the Immokalee Workers campaign and an open discussion about what we can do together for Fair Food in our area. The event is free (of course) so bring your ideas.
- J27: March on the Capitol-
The NYC Local, along with SP locals from around the country will be traveling to DC for this event. Contact spnyc(at)spnyc.org, join our event list, or check here for Socialist Party meetups in DC.
[from UFPJ]THE PEOPLE HAVE SPOKEN, NOW CONGRESS MUST ACT.
On Saturday, Jan. 27th, people from every corner of the country will march on Washington, DC. Our message will be clear, our voice will be strong: End the war in Iraq, Bring all the troops home now! We urge you to join us!
On Mon., Jan. 29th, we will take our message directly to the new Congress during our lobby day.
You can help make these critical actions a great success:

Liberation Film Series: The Patriot Game-
The Patriot Game (1979)
Join the Socialist Party for the next in our Liberation Film Series:
The Patriot Game : A Film by Arthur Mac Caig
Two days before the 91st anniversary of the Irish Rising in Dublin. What better time of year to look at the history of the Irish liberation struggle?
You won't see this film very often: it's long out of print in this country, and was banned for many years in the UK. Shipped directly from Ireland, you have a chance to see this award winning documentary for free.
Sunday, April 22nd, 2pm
339 Lafayette Street (between Bleecker & Bond), Manhattan, NYC.
Hit buzzer #11; come up to the Muste Room on the 3rd Floor.
(Note, we're up a couple of flights of stairs.)
DIRECTIONS: Take 6 train to Bleecker Street or F/V train to Broadway / Lafayette.
Rich in emotional images, often tender but more often terrifying the patriot game tells the story of the long and bitter battle for the 6 counties of the north of Ireland. The films introduction covers Irelands history from colonization to the territory’s division in 1922.
The Patriot Game then details the events of the decade that began in 1968. Through powerful portraits as the infamous “Bloody Sunday”
The film show the IRA at work – much of it filmed clandestinely – as they argue their cause.
Thorough and thoughtful …. Mac Caig’s film by dissecting the situation so coolly, helps emphasize, the bitterness and the confrontations. Regardless of how one may feel about politics it is a worthy and well made documentary.
"The best overview of the Northern Irish conflict that we've seen... a lucid and knowledgeable introduction put together with skill and sensitivity."—R. Ruby Rich, Chicago Reader
"This extraordinary and moving documentary reviews ten years of armed warfare by the IRA and places today's headlines in their proper political and economic context. Through vivid footage of street battles and interviews with participants, THE PATRIOT GAME forcefully debunks the twin myths that the IRA is a 'terrorist organization' fighting 'a religious war.'"—Kevin J. Kelley, The Guardian
"An excellent example of political cinema, rich in emotional images, a film which is both tender and powerful."—Morando Morandini, Il Giorno (Milan)
"Informative, vivid, and partisan. The footage of urban guerillas is extraordinary. I've seen a number of films on Northern Ireland, none have depicted the situation this graphically."—J. Hoberman, Village Voice
"An important historical background to the Irish War."—Gordon Hitchens, Variety
"THE PATRIOT GAME captures the raw spirit of Irish nationalist resistance and shows, for the first time, incidents which the British media have steadfastly refused to show."—Virginia Dignam, Morning Star (London)
"Powerful, dynamic... Extremely detailed presentation of the troubles in Northern Ireland. As an interpretation of the Republican view, it is excellent, accurate and moving."—EFLA Evaluations

About "¡Gigante: Despierta!":
In 2006, a historic mobilization for immigrant rights swept the USA as millions
took the streets. Mainstream news media predictably covered the marches with a
mix of surprise, ignorance, and racism, yet grassroots media activists were
there to document the voices and the stories behind this mass movement.
*!Gigante Despierta!* is a DVD compilation of compelling short films from all
around the country, due to hit the streets in the weeks before Mayday 2007.
It is a collective memory and a tool to inspire action this MayDay 2007, when
the Giant will raise its voice again to say: we are one people, without borders.
We are here, and we are here to stay!

Picnic For Peace - Bronx, St. Aug. 18th- Picnic For Peace - Bronx, St. Aug. 18th
Nearly 70% of Americans oppose the U.S. War in Iraq. Despite this, 3,600 U.S. soldiers have been killed and an estimated 10,000 Iraqis die each month. Become an active part of the pro-peace majority during a day of food, music and discussion in support of a peaceful and just resolution to the war.
August 18th will be a day of food, music and discussion about creating an peaceful and just resolution to the war. But, that is not all...
Please consider bringing along any excess coats or clothing you have. They will be collected by a community organization from the South Bronx for the benefit of needy children in the neighborhood.
So, come on out for a day in park and help create a more just society - in the future by stopping the war and in the present by ensuring that our youngsters have proper coats and clothing.

SP-USA Convention and New Socialist Women- Susan Dorazio susandor(at)crocker.com
Comrades,
Two weeks from yesterday (i.e., Friday, October 19) the SP 2007 National Convention will be convening. As you will see from the agenda draft below, it will be a full 3 days of discussion and decision-making. I hope that many of you will be there, or will be in close contact with your delegates and alternates between now and then, so that your opinions will be represented.
SP women: I hope you will be able to attend a meeting of the Women's Commission over breakfast on Sunday morning. I also look forward to informal opportunities to talk with others about the status of and possibilities for women SP members, in the party and in our communities. One of the best ways women can influence the direction of the party is to be a National Co-Chair or Co-Vice-Chair, or a member of the National Committee. Please consider being a candidate for one of these leadership positions.
An Evening in Solidarity with the Iraq Freedom Congress-
Which forces should the U.S. anti-war movement support in Iraq? Should we give blanket support to all groups “resisting” the US occupation – including ex-Baathists and Islamic fundamentalists? Can we forget the grim liquidation campaigns against leftists in Sadaam Hussein’s Iraq in the early 70s and after the Iranian Revolution in the 80s? Does political Islam or right-wing nationalism offer a road forward for the majority of Iraqis?
Join the Socialist Party USA (NYC local) and the National Organization for Iraqi Freedom Struggles for a discussion of the progressive secular alternatives offered by the Iraq Freedom Congress. The evening will include a screening of the short documentary entitled “The Iraqi Civil Resistance.” Award-winning journalist Bill Weinberg will provide a report-back from an international conference on building solidarity with the Iraq Freedom Congress (IFC) held in Tokyo this past summer.
Bill Weinberg is editor of the electronic journal World War 4 Report (www.WW4Report.com) and author of Homage to Chiapas: The New Indigenous Struggles in Mexico (Verso, 2000). His work has appeared in numerous publications, including The Nation, AlterNet, New America Media, NACLA Report on the Americas, etc. He is also co-producer of the "The Moorish Orthodox Radio Crusade" on WBAI.
