- Who We Are-
100 years, the Socialist Party of NYC has been fighting for a more just society based on the principles of socialism and radical democracy. As the local affiliate of the Socialist Party USA , we are part of a nationwide party working for social and economic justice through electoral campaigns, education and direct action. Living in the belly of this cruel, wasteful system, we believe that New York socialists have a special obligation to struggle for peace and justice in our city and around the world. We invite you to join us.

- Celebrate May Day 2006-
On May 1st walkouts at schools and workplaces across the US will take place in solidarity with immigrant com- munities under attack by Congressional legislation. These walkouts invoke the powerful tradition of May Day - the socialist celebration of international working class solidarity. Once again US immigrants are taking a leadership role in the struggle for social and economic justice, just as they did at the birth of May Day in Chicago a hundred and twenty years ago. The Socialist Party USA joins in the celebration of May Day and condemns the Democratic and Republican Parties for militarizing our borders and failing to protect the rights of all workers. Callous and ineffectual immigration policies are exacerbating racism in the US and creating an underclass of super-exploited workers, all in the service of corporate profits. The Socialist Party furthermore rejects assimilationist policies and attitudes which marginalize and criminalize the diverse heritages of immigrants and people of color.
Experience teaches us that only militant industry-wide labor action can challenge corporate power and win better wages, hours and working conditions. Nevertheless, the global inequalities that compel migrants to seek risky, back-breaking, low wage labor in the US cannot be resolved within the constraints of modern capitalism. In the tradition of May Day we call for the abolition of capitalist systems of ownership and trade, and the creation of a truly democratic society where production fulfills human need, not profit. In a world riddled with war and underdevelopment, we also add racism, militarism and imperialism to the list of global cancers which must be uprooted as prerequisites to peace and justice.
The Socialist Party encourages all members and affiliates to take part in the May Day call for “No Work, No School, No Buying, No Selling” and for members and affiliates to take part in local May Day actions.
A list of actions can be found on the Socialist Party USA website www.sp-usa.org and on http://www.nohr4437.org/.
- May Day & A29-
Two massive marches in NYC saw SP-USA contingents taking part. A combined NY/NJ group marched in the UFPJ anti-war march on April 29th, along with allies from a number of groups. We distributed stacks of The Socialist [read the PDF Here], and flyers about upcoming NYC SP events. On May 1st, SP Members took part in a march and Civil Disobedience action against US government torture in Guantanamo, while others marched with the immigrant rights rally to Union Square, the traditional May Day meeting place for more than a century. Photos will be up shortly.
- UPGRADING SITE!-
Please forgive the mess: we're currently upgrading the SP-NYC site. It might look a bit odd for the next day or so, or else you might hit upon some error page. Not to worry. We'll have everything back to normal (better, in fact) by mid week.

Manufacturing Consent: Noam Chomsky and the Media
Funny, provocative and surprisingly accessible,
MANUFACTURING CONSENT explores the political life and
ideas of Noam Chomsky, world-renowned linguist,
intellectual and political activist. In a dynamic
collage of new and original footage, biography,
archival gems, imaginative graphics and outrageous
illustrations, the film highlights Chomskys probing
analysis of mass media. A mammoth two-part project,
MANUFACTURING CONSENT is nonetheless light on its
feet, favoring a style that encourages viewers to
question its own workings, as Chomsky himself
encourages his listeners to extricate themselves from
the web of deceit by undertaking a course of
intellectual self-defense.

- Wed. July 30: Rally to Stop Healthcare Privatization - Save Medicare!- Wed. July 30: Rally to Stop Healthcare Privatization
As the healthcare crisis deepens, people are searching for alternatives to a corporate-driven system that leaves nearly 50 million Americans uninsured. Not surprisingly, the healthcare industry's solution is even more privatization. GHI & HIP are two of the latest targets of this privatizing campaign. But what if the solution - or a partial solution - to this dilemma already exists?
On Wednesday July 30th at 4:30 pm at 25 Beaver Street, a coalition of healthcare rights groups will celebrate the 43rd Birthday of Medicare. Medicare, along with Social Security, is one of the most successful public programs in the history of the U.S. It is also another target for the ever-greedy healthcare industry to convert into a profit-making enterprise.
- Statement on Religious Freedom- July 17, 2008
Statement on Religious Freedom
by the Faith and Socialism Commission
After watching the candidates of the two capitalist parties involve themselves with religious leaders and subsequently turn their backs on them, it is important for us to make observations from a Socialist perspective concerning religious freedom.
The McCain-Hagee controversy should leave the electorate wondering why it is so important for religious leaders to be so self-involved as to have to endorse political candidates. In addition, it is alarming that John McCain would cater to Christian fundamentalists by seeking the backing of a dispensationalist preacher such as John Hagee, who is known for making intolerant comments about our gay, Jewish, and Muslim sisters and brothers. Such extremism should be condemned.

- What If Obama Wins- What Change We Can Believe In?
When we (Americans) walk into the poles on November 4th this year, most of us who consider our selves to be progressive, or left of center will vote for Barack Obama. Obama provides “hope” and offers “change”. Before we cast our ballots we must think about what hope and what change Obama really provides. It would be foolish to argue that there is really no difference between Obama and McCain. It is undeniable that if McCain were elected there is a good chance Americans could lose their right to abortions. Up to 3 supreme court justices could retire in the next four years, and it is a safe bet that Obama will not replace them with judges who will overturn Roe v. Wade. It is also true that Obama has never used a racial slur in public, while McCain openly referred to his Vietnamese captors as “gooks”. While Obama does not offer any specific policies to further social issues such as racial and gender equality, at least he is more likely to prevent the loss of past victories. It is also true that Obama is more likely to provide more funding for some basic social programs like welfare and education. While this will do nothing to change the overall system, having this extra funding makes a significant difference in many peoples daily lives. There are even a few things actually progressive about Obama. Obama’s tax plan (tax the rich at a higher rate than the poor through graduated income tax) would make the American tax system more progressive. Finally, electing the first Black man to office IS progress (just as electing the first woman vice president would be).

- The Success of the Dutch Left: What is the Secret?- The Socialist party of the Netherlands (SP) is one of Europe's most successful left-wing parties. At a point in
history where other left-wing forces are struggling just to maintain their membership, the Dutch left grows
stronger every year. The result is not only one election victory after the other but the SP has also become a
mass party with tens of thousands of members which allows for impressive street manifestations as a part of
their campaign work. The party has especially strong support among workers. The SP was the driving force in
the "NO-campaign" that led to the rejection of the centralistic and market liberal proposal for an EU constitution
by Dutch voters.
Looking from the US, we can ask how a modern socialist mass party can be built and grow so quickly in a
country not known for its left wing traditions. The NYC Local of the Socialist Party USA is happy to invite
