I am not a labor leader. I don't want you to follow me or anyone else. If you are looking for a Moses to lead you out of the capitalist wilderness you will stay right where you are. I would not lead you into this promised land if I could, because if I could lead you in, someone else could lead you out.

— Eugene Debs

Statement In Solidarity with Marichu Baoanan

Statement In Solidarity with Marichu Baoanan

The Socialist Party USA (NYC Local) stands in solidarity with the just struggle of Marichu Baoanan against the Baja family and the Labaire Travel Agency. It is painful to hear the stories of mental and physical abuse, over- work, and outright slavery that seem to multiple daily. It is an outrage that workers employed to care for such intimacies such as homes and families, are so frequently subjected to abuse. Even more frightening are the stories that make it into mainstream media, yet only manage to scratch the surface of the actual amount of daily abuse.

The rules of capitalist globalization lie at the heart of these abuses. Under the pressure of this system, workers are forced by economic circumstances to migrate to centers of financial capital with the hope of attaining better wages, labor protections and other social conditions. When they arrive, they soon discover that their legal status, languages of origin and desire for employment are used as weapons by their employers to reduce wages, or, as in the case of Marichu Baoanan, to met out abuse and impose conditions of slave-labor.read more »
